What My Worst Investment in Business Taught Me
Jul 28, 2021Hey Beautiful!
One of the worst investments in my business was in a coaching program. One of the best investments in business was in a coaching program.
We know we need to invest in our business to grow it, right?!
We want to learn new skills:
· To drive traffic to our website
· To reach a new level of income
· To generate more revenue
· To have a six or seven figure business
· To increase our reach and create a following of potential buyers on social media.
But it can get a little tricky when we think about it. What makes a good investment? How can we make sure that we are investing in the right certification, course, or coach?
I was super excited to give you some ideas on this topic because it feels so wrong when your hard earned money goes down the drain because you bet on the wrong person.
So, today I want to share with you a few ways to make sure you are investing in the right growth opportunity for your business.
Here is what I learned from my worst investment in business.
What makes a bad investment?
1. If your potential coach has a “my way or the highway” attitude, that’s a warning sign. Avoid that coach.
o One size fits all is not a winning approach in business. You need a coach or program that gives you room to create your own unique style.
o Your unique style and attitude are what makes you stand out in business.
2. If the program you want to sign up for is too much ahead of where you are in your business journey, you might want to really think about your decision to invest.
o I invested in business growth opportunities that were years ahead of the phase my business was in. So, I had to do a lot more work than what was required to get benefits out of those investments.
3. If you feel pressured to invest, avoid investing. Any investment that is based on fears, will not work because you are not in alignment with your highest good.
o Don’t get me wrong: if you have a fear of missing out on an opportunity to invest in a coach or in a course, it’s probably that you know you need it. And that’s quite different from being pressured into making your decision.
What makes a good investment in a coaching program or a course?
1. Do it if your intuition says “YES”. Yes, use your intuitive mind to pick the right investment for your business.
o There is a reason why the most successful business owners rely on their intuition or gut feeling. If it doesn’t feel right, they don’t do it.
o It might have all the bells and whistles; but if the coach or program doesn’t feel right, it’s probably not for you.
o Don’t let the analytical side of you stop you by questioning your instincts.
2. Ask yourself: how will the course or coaching program benefit you in a 6-month timeframe?
o If the coach can clearly articulate how, they will help you shift your business, go for it.
o If the course has a step-by-step process that clearly creates results that will change your business in 6 months based on the testimonials, it might be worth investigating more.
3. Quit the DIY-strategy attitude.
Avoid trying to reinvent the wheel; when someone else has already gone through the path, it’s easier to follow what they’ve already learned.
4. Invest if you have the budget to pay for it. Or, if you can find ways to pay for it without putting your own or your family's survival in the balance.
o I don’t buy in the burn the boat approach. Being in business is a marathon not a spring; you need to be in it for the long run.
5. If the coach or course style matches your needs and the way you learn, it’s time to invest to grow your business.
o Do you need details to easily learn?
o Or, are you a visual person?
Make sure that the person you are learning from has the capacity to deliver their expertise in a way that fits you. You can find out more about them on social media or on their website.
Above all you need to honor yourself when choosing your next investment in your business.
